August 2003

Today is the one year anniversary of Storefront Demme. I encourage you to celebrate but don't get carried away. It's a school night.

A few of Jonathan Demme's favorite films

I've decided to celebrate this anniversary with a link to Jonathan Demme's Sight & Sound list, from 1992. Every ten years, Sight & Sound invites critics and filmmakers to list their favorite films. Demme last partook in 1992.

I've also added the Adaptation soundtrack to the Soundtracks page.

Next update: a new interview with Demme editor, Carol Littleton.

In an effort to keep the anti-Goldie Hawn propaganda alive, I've added a link to a story from Salon.com, in which Hawn is taken to task for continually down-playing her role in the destruction of Swing Shift. Thankfully, her interference has been rewarded with 20 years of pitifully bad movies (Wildcats, Overboard, The Out-of-Towners, Town and Country, etc.).

The author of the article, Charles Taylor, refers to "Swing Shift: A Tale of Hollywood," by Steve Vineberg. You can read that article here.

According to a recent press release, The Agronomist will play at The Toronto International Film Festival , between September 4th and 13th. The festival's official program will be released on Tuesday, at which point days and showtimes will be announced. Check back for further details. Thanks to site reader Shawn Zeytinoglu.

I've added links to two interviews that Thandie Newton gave, while promoting The Truth About Charlie, in October 2002: Film Monthly, and Dramatic/Romantic Movies.

According to allmovie.com, The Agronomist is 90 minutes long. The Jonathan Demme page at allmovie.com features a lengthy Demme biography and filmography.

Finally, in searching the net, I discovered the little-known fact that, in 1997, Jonathan Demme and Harrison Ford were planning to collaborate on a re-make of the Norwegian film Insomnia. Obviously, their version never came to fruition. The re-make was ultimately directed by Christopher Nolan, and it starred Al Pacino. It was released in May 2002.

Next update: more on the notorious Swing Shift debacle.

NOTE: unfortunately, the rest of the August 2003 archive was lost in an unexpected computer malfunction (these happen to me all the time). Most of this lost material can be found in other areas of the site.
