According to The Hollywood Stock Exchange, Jonathan Demme is worth $7.04. For a little perspective, Martin Scorsese is worth $13.35, Paul Thomas Anderson is worth $12.54, and Michael Bay is worth $167.50.

The Eye in the Door: the novel

When they're not busy pricing filmmakers, The Hollywood Stock Exchange breaks news on upcoming projects. Here's what they had to say about another possible novel adaptation, by Jonathan Demme:

"Acclaimed director Jonathan Demme is slated to direct the feature film adaptation of Pat Barker's 1995 novel The Eye in the Door. Demme will also develop the film through his production company, Clinica Estetico. The Eye in the Door is a psychological thriller set in London during World War I. The story revolves around a British soldier in the army's internal espionage division who finds himself under investigation. The novel is the second in a trilogy. The first book, Regeneration, was made into a film in the U.K. in 1997 titled Behind the Lines. Demme directed 1998's Beloved and won an Oscar for his direction of 1991's The Silence of the Lambs."

David Cronenberg

According to Cronenberg on Cronenberg, Jonathan Demme almost directed David Cronenberg's directorial debut, Shivers. Here's the story, in Cronenberg's words:

"I was prepared to move to LA to get Shivers made when I met Jonathan Demme there. He was renting Barbara Steele's beach house. We were sitting on the beach and Demme says, 'I've read your script.' I said, 'You've read my script!?' He said 'Yes, this guy from Cinepix came down and asked me if I wanted to direct it.' I just went insane. Cinepix desperately wanted the script, but they didn't want me to direct, for obvious reasons. To come 3,000 miles to discover this betrayal! So I went back to Toronto really angry."

Myla Kent, the webmaster at Meryl Streep Online, has created a page for The Manchurian Candidate. In addition to a synopsis, this page includes a link to The Manchurian Candidate page at Greg's Previews.

Meryl Streep talks on the phone

Also, the internet movie database has finally added a page for The Manchurian Candidate (there's still nothing there on The Agronomist, however). As I may have mentioned before, Daniel Pyne (Pacific Heights, Doc Hollywood, Any Given Sunday) is listed as the film's writer. The only cast members listed at this point are Denzel Washington, and Meryl Streep, although Liev Schreiber recently joined the cast. Presumably, Tak Fujimoto will be the cinematographer. He's working on a Robin Williams film (Final Cut), until The Manchurian Candidate's August start-date.
