Pablo Ferro
One of the masters of title design, Pablo Ferro is also one of the few members of his profession
to achieve some degree of name recognition, like legendary title
designer Saul Bass (whose work Ferro was hired to reprise in Gus Van Sant's Psycho
re-make). Ferro started his career in advertising where he pioneered many techniques that
he later introduced to the world of commercial filmmaking.
Ferro has designed the titles for five films directed by Jonathan Demme
and two more films that he produced (that thing you do!,
Devil in a Blue Dress). Demme has called Pablo Ferro "the best designer
of film titles in the country today" and Stanley Kubrick once called him a genius.
One of the trademarks of Ferro's title design is the use of his own distinctive
handwriting. This practice came to popularity in Dr. Strangelove and
continued in Stop Making Sense and several films directed by Barry Sonnenfeld
(including both Men in Black films). Ferro's other frequent collaborators
include Hal Ashby (Harold & Maude, Being There, and others), and Sam Raimi
(Darkman, For Love of the Game). For more, see
