Before entering the film industry, Jonathan Demme worked as a rock journalist in England, during the late 1960s. In fact, his first film credit was as music co-ordinator on Eye Witness, in 1970 (he was hired by producer Irving Allen because of his rock journalism background). Over the years, Demme has repeatedly cited music as his first love and has done some of his finest work in music videos (see below), concert films (Stop Making Sense, Storefront Hitchcock), and musical shorts (The Complex Sessions). He has also commissioned original songs from respected rock musicians, including David Byrne, Bruce Springsteen, and Neil Young. Demme's use of music is innovative and adventurous.
